Baby Clam
Baby clams are among the most popular types of clams and serve as a key ingredient in rice or fish soup dishes.
These small, bivalve mollusks are commonly found in shallow, sandy coastal regions and estuaries. Typically measuring about 1-2 centimeters in length, they possess thin, oval-shaped shells that are usually light brown or tan in color.
As filter feeders, baby clams extract tiny organisms like plankton and detritus from the water using their siphons. They play a crucial role in the food chain, serving as a food source for various fish species, birds, and marine mammals.
In some areas, baby clams are harvested for human consumption and are frequently incorporated into chowders, soups, and pasta dishes. However, excessive harvesting of baby clams and other shellfish can adversely affect the ecosystem and impact the livelihoods of local fishing communities.
